It was a mild Saturday afternoon in North Dublin for the meeting of Ayrfield and Rivervalley Rangers. The latter looking to get their first win of the campaign and to bounce back in a positive fashion after the disappointment of Monday evening. The game was a lively one to start with Rangers making a strong start with some excellent passing moves to set up menacing attacks down both flanks.. Mark Flynn and Dave Brown had the beating of their opposition full back and winger respectively down the right side in the first half with Brown coming close to converting a chance excellently worked by Kestell. It wasn't long before the swords outfit took the lead as Rivervalleys answer to Gabriel Batistuta, Gary Weafer scored his second goal in as many games after some lovely work by the impressive James Milligan in the final third. Late in the first half Rivervalley conceded a corner, and with a fine delivery into the box, Ayrfield drew level. It was regrettable from a Rangers point of view, having had the majority of possession, and many chances throughout the half. The second half was far less pleasing on the eye as Ayrfield grew into the game more and more. The game was being closely contested in the middle of the park as Paul Daly and James Milligan worked extra hard to curtail any of the home sides more probing advancements in the game. It looked to all as if the points were going to be shared until in the 91st minute when James Rock did well to win a free kick in a dangerous position. The big men were up from the back and it was the captain on the day, Eoin O'Rourke who delivered a great ball into the box for Sniper Steo Walshe to rise like a salmon out of the water and headhome... pure adulation on the Rangers sideline as the swords outfit headed towards their first victory of the new season! The lads in maroon held out well for the last few minutes of added on time for a well deserved 2-1 victory
Well done to all involved
